5 Feng Shui Tips to Make the Most of Winter 2024

Few times are more beautiful than the solemn peace of winter. The days are darker but when we step outside, we walk in bright white worlds of snow. I love these days of bare trees and gray skies.

How do you make the most of winter days?

Many of us don’t like winter. It can make us feel hopeless and alone, or miserable. Slushy gray streets that wet our shoes is about the worst feeling I can think of. But that just means it’s time to change your perception of this wonderful and unique season.

With these tips, soon enough you’ll feel as free and bright as July.

1. Add Greens and Deep Blue Colors to Energize Your Space

Feel cold indoors but the thermostat is turned up?

It might not just be the air, but more the psychological sensation of existing in a colder, darker world. When you feel like your home is a dim cave—even if you’ve got it baking at 80 degrees—it’s easy to feel a chill creeping down your spine.

You can counteract the chill-inducing gray sky of January by adding jewel tone colors of blues and greens to your home. Placing emerald Greens, and Navy Blues in your home will do much to change the winter color dynamic you feel. From velvety soft pillows to colored candles, dishware or glassware, infuse elements of green or blue or spark the energy of the space and you.

2. Activate the Water Element with Mirrors

Reflections create energy and abundance. Place mirrors to reflect the beauty of a space, or to reflect what you want to attract back in your life.

Use mirrors in the dining room, hallways, entryway, and office. Each space can serve a different purpose for the mirror. Here’s a quick guide:

Dining Room: creates family harmony, conversation, and family abundance.

Office: Place the mirror near where you sit at your desk to grow in prosperity. Make sure mirror isn’t directly across from you to double the workload—but in your office to expand your career and wealth.

Entryway: A great way to show the expansion of your home. Place the mirror perpendicular to the doorway so it doesn’t reflect out the door. Sending chi out the door will minimize the energy of the house.

Hallways: Mirrors are great to help with the chi and flow of the house. A gallery of mirrors can be a fun way to add interest to the space as well.

3. Declutter and Organize

Nothing is worse than clutter in wintertime. As the cold winds attack you from outside, you trip over a why-is-it-still-out-there Christmas box. . .happens to us all.

However, 2024 is a great year to listen to Feng Shui and save your ankle.

During winter, take extra care to declutter and organize your space to promote positive energy flows. Put away boxes. Pick up those boxes and shelve them properly. Reorder your kitchen. Urban Lark is not Marie Kondo, but having a well-organized home in winter helps keep away melancholy feelings during this vulnerable time.

If you struggle with winter blues, a tidy environment might just be the friend you need.

Additionally, winter is a time to tidy your mind and heart by journaling. Order your thoughts and feelings by spending time with yourself and a notebook. A journal during these months can feel like a warm friend and also create positive energy for yourself.

4. Indoor Plants Bring Vitality

Walking around in January can feel like an eternal vision of “In the Bleak Midwinter”: bare skeletal trees, gray slush soaked gutters, frosted fields of muds, and people mummy-wrapped in gray coats. . .

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have early springtime in your home!

Create your own spring vitality by adding plants and greenery in your home. Here are our recommendations:

  • ZZ Plant: It’s a natural air filter and removes toxins from the air. ZZ plants can live in low light and drought conditions, so you don’t need to water them often (once a month is usually enough). Since it grows slow, you also don’t have to worry about changing containers. This plant is the real deal without having to own a faux plant and is great for beginners. The only drawback—don’t use it in your next recipe and keep it away from pets as it’s a toxic plant. Ingesting the plant whether you are a person or pet can be poisonous.

  • Snake Plant:  I have owned the same snake plant for several years and can count on one hand how many times I’ve watered it. But it continues to grow and thrive while purifying the air. If you have allergies, you’ll be glad to know that snake plants can ease your symptoms because of their powerful oxygen-producing qualities. Also, their sword-shaped leaves can add some drama and flair to your space.

  • Flaming Dragon Tree (or Dracaena marginata): This is another one that can withstand neglect and still come out looking strong and sturdy. It can resemble a palm tree because of its crown of thin leaves, which can help you pretend it’s not winter. Put this one in a shadier spot in your home and water about one to two times a month during the winter.

5. Open the Windows and Front Door (Just for 10 Minutes)

No I’m not crazy.

No matter what you do in winter, no matter how much you perfect your home, allow for positive energy, etc—eventually your home will feel stuffy from the heating or stuffy from just being cooped indoors.

The best way to fix that is to embrace the season for a short time by throwing open the front door or cracking open a window for a little while. Fresh air—cold as January—will blow in and revitalize your space, keep you from lethargy, and make you feel a sense of harmony with the outdoors. Seems scary, I know. But if you give it a try for a little while, you’ll feel like you have a whole new day of energy.

Don’t miss out.
