From Garage to Green Oasis: A Sustainable Chicago Retreat

The beginning phases of converting this Chicago garage space into a sustainable, eco-friendly sanctuary.

Chicagoans know that space is precious—whether you live in a classic brownstone, a historic greystone, or a suburban home, maximizing every square foot is key. So, when I transformed an unused garage attic space into a cozy, eco-conscious retreat, I knew this project had to be as stylish as it was sustainable.

The result? A warm, inviting coach house built entirely with salvaged materials, recycled textiles, and eco-friendly finishes—proving that sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury.

Sustainability Meets Style: How It Was Done

This garage-to-retreat transformation was all about thoughtful material choices. Here’s how Urban Lark brought the vision to life while keeping it green:

1. Reclaimed Wood Beams for Timeless Character

Instead of using newly milled lumber, I sourced salvaged beams to create exposed ceiling details that bring warmth and history into the space. This not only adds character but also reduces the demand for new wood—a win for sustainability and design.

Salvaged beams were built into the ceiling and walls were plastered using eco-friendly materials.

2. Handcrafted Copper Hood for the Fireplace

Nothing says cozy retreat like a fireplace, but we took it a step further with a handcrafted, sustainably sourced copper hood. Copper is naturally antibacterial, highly durable, and 100% recyclable, making it an eco-friendly choice for a luxurious, long-lasting design feature. Over time, it develops a beautiful patina, adding warmth and character to the space without the need for harsh chemical treatments.

The handcrafted copper hood was designed to elevate the existing stone fireplace for historical character. Salvaged lighting and sconces also add a touch of charm.

3. Natural Marble for a Timeless and Sustainable Kitchen

For the kitchen and bar area, I chose natural marble, a timeless material that brings both elegance and sustainability to the space. Unlike synthetic alternatives, marble is a naturally occurring stone that requires minimal processing, reducing its environmental impact. Its longevity and durability make it a smart investment, as it can last for generations without needing replacement. Plus, its classic veining and organic beauty make every piece unique, adding a one-of-a-kind touch to this Chicago coach house retreat.

The natural marble blends seamlessly into the kitchen cabinets and walls giving the space a timeless appeal.

4. Vintage & Recycled Textiles for a Collected Look

From upholstered chairs to layered rugs, every fabric in this space was sourced with sustainability in mind. I used recycled, vintage, and ethically made textiles, ensuring a luxurious yet responsible aesthetic.

Rugs, throws and bedding were all carefully sourced from thrift shops and estate sales.

5. A Vintage Dresser Turned Stylish Bathroom Vanity

Sustainability meets style in the bathroom with a salvaged antique dresser repurposed into a vanity. This piece brings a rustic, storied charm to the space while embracing eco-conscious design. By giving new life to an old dresser, we reduced waste and added warmth and character that a mass-produced vanity simply can’t replicate. Outfitted with modern plumbing and amenities, this one-of-a-kind vanity seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary functionality, making the bathroom a true retreat within this Chicago coach house transformation.
