THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN CHICAGO (FOR HOME DESIGN LOVERS)
Pixels: Gonzalo Facello
The holidays are approaching fast, and I seem to always struggle with finding the perfect gift for family and friends. I like to be thoughtful and creative, and it’s important for me to shop small-business. In fact, I pledge every year not to grab gifts from big box stores. Not only that, but I also love thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts that go beyond the norm. Nothing gives me greater joy than giving an unexpected gift to a loved one and seeing a giant smile on their face.
Shopping at small, independently owned stores also supports the local economy and is a large part of sustaining a healthy community. We don’t want to see our communities turn into ubiquitous shopping malls! Not only would our economy suffer, but so would our creativity. So… let’s be innovative in 2024 and forget the chain stores! Here is my list of unique gifts for those who, just like me, love interior design and architecture.
Remember: shopping small also produces less carbon and less waste for the environment. It’s a win-win for us and the environment!
Now, let’s get started! First up…

THE BEST GIFTS FOR ART COLLECTORS
Cost: $40 +
I’m a proud collector of Natalie Osborne prints, and I can confidently say, they are some of my favorite pieces I own. Natalie Osborne studied art in Chicago, lived in Brooklyn, NY for a time, and made her way back to our city where she is now a full-time artist. The best way I can describe Natalie’s style is urban cubism.
Using a combination of graffiti meets cubists, Natalie creates beautiful women in various silhouettes. I’m absolutely obsessed with her art style and how she often displays her images in ornate gold frames. The juxtaposition of urban art meets French gilt provides perfect tension between modern and old. (Prints don’t come framed, so you will have to factor in the cost of framing as well.)

THE BEST GIFTS FOR HISTORY LOVERS
Cost: $20 per person
50 East Erie
Chicago, IL
To me, nothing is more thoughtful than planning an “experience gift.” And for those who haven’t experienced the Richard Driehaus Museum, you must book your ticket now, especially if you love the era of the Gilded Age (1870s - early 1900s). The Driehaus Museum, once the residence of the Nickerson family in the 1870s was known back then as “the marble palace” because of its opulence. Walking into the grand foyer, you will immediately feel transported to another time.
This is Chicago’s premier example of living during the time of the Gilded Age. The house has a rich history and was built after the devastating Chicago Fire, making Chicago a destination for business and merchants of the time. From the moment you step in, you feel immersed in the lifestyle, from the menus on the dining tables to the old parlor and stunning libraries that were rebuilt and restored with grandeur!
There are often revolving exhibitions along with the house tour, so check the schedule for current events as well. The museum is open from 11 am - 5 pm.

THE BEST GIFTS FOR HOME DECOR LOVERS
Cost: $35 +
33 East Quincy Street
Riverside, IL
Higgin’s Glass is nestled in a tiny suburban neighborhood: Riverside. Founded in 1948 by Michael and Frances Higgins, Higgins fuses glass to create beautiful works with layers of texture and eye-catching color combinations. The results are stunning geometric shapes and whimsical lines. Higgins Glass Studio brands themselves as “modern miracles with everyday glass” and they aren’t exaggerating—their glass is stunning.
Today, the studio is still running with homage to the midcentury modern past, but with a modern twist. You can purchase beautiful plates, bowls, ornaments, and mobiles. The glass can be used on top of a table or displayed as interesting wall art to make a wall pop with color!
On the topic of modern art, let’s dive into…
THE BEST GIFTS FOR MODERN NOSTALGICS
Cost: $50 +
238 N Main St
Elizabeth, IL
If you ever drive to Galena, Illinois from Chicago, and stop 12 miles outside of your destination, you’ll land in a quaint, unassuming town called Elizabeth. You might not take much notice, but for the past 35+ years, Elizabeth has been the home to what I believe is one of the most cutting-edge potters in the country: Paul Eshelman of Eshelman Pottery. Schooled at Rhode Island School of Design, Eshleman’s work has sleek, angled curves with a touch of mid-century modernism to the mix. He has supplied pottery for famous restaurants like Alinea in Chicago as well as others across the country.
Four words that Eshelman uses to describe his pottery are “contemporary, elegant, functional, and simple.” I love using these sippers (photo above) as succulent planters, and his shallow bowls as decorative trays. There are many ways to use his beautiful pottery beyond function and more for decor. They are very display-worthy and make the perfect gift!
